Colorado Gov '06: Lindstrom to Challenge Ritter in Dem Primary

Big development in the '06 Colorado Governor's race today, where the current GOoP Gov Bill Owens (with current approve/disapprove of 48%-46%) is term-limited.  Dem State Rep. Gary Lindstrom has thrown his hat in to the ring, setting up a primary fight with the only other Dem candidate, Bill Ritter, former Denver DA.

The announcement was made public via The Vail Daily News:

BRECKENRIDGE -- Gary Lindstrom, Eagle County's representative in Denver, will run for the state's top spot -- he announced Thursday he's vying for the governor's seat in 2006.

The 31-year local resident and former county commissioner who currently represents Summit, Eagle and Lake counties in the State House of Representatives, has decided to make a bid for the Democratic nomination to fill the gubernatorial seat.

New Ipsos-AP Poll: God & Politics in the USA

Front-paged @ SoapBlox.net - the NEW blogging framework

Take a look at this new poll from Ipsos:

Nearly all U.S. respondents said faith is important to them and only 2 percent said they do not believe in God. Almost 40 percent said religious leaders should try to sway policymakers, notably higher than in other countries.

"Our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian policies and religious leaders have an obligation to speak out on public policy, otherwise they're wimps," said David Black, a retiree from Osborne, Pa., who agreed to be interviewed after he was polled.

In contrast, 85 percent of French object to clergy activism -- the strongest opposition of any nation surveyed. France has strict curbs on public religious expression and, according to the poll, 19 percent are atheists. South Korea is the only other nation with that high a percentage of nonbelievers.

I need to move to France.  More vacation, shorter hours, and less of this silly my God, your God talk.

Analysis Of Pew Topology: How Dems Can Wedge

This will be the last story on this study, I promise. You can find out which typology you are here. In a real stunner, I'm a Liberal--Chirs

Front-paged @ jScoop - a new blog community looking for passionate, thoughtful bloggers in search of a soap box. Stop by, join, and blog!

This week, the Pew Research Center released a new, comprehensive look at the American electorate.  What has been great about reading over the results so far is how Pew broke down the demographics groups in this country.

Instead of Red v. Blue, or Liberal v. Conservative, Pew created 9 different groups (3 for the right, 3 for the middle, and 3 for the left) to help better understand to current political climate here in the US.

The break-down and definition of the groups is found here, but here is the summary:

I haven't gone through all the pages and data yet (will by the weekend), but I just thought I'd share with you all some of their key findings, and how we can use them in our local at state races to help re-build the Democratic foundation and tradition that guided this country for 60+ years.

The Government is Bankrupt & Broken!

or Using Bush Social Security logic.

OH MY GOD!  Did you see the news today?  The US Government is BANKRUPT!  It is BROKEN!  In the 3Q of 2004, it ran a record $165 Billion shortfall!  The estimate for FY2004 was a short fall of $450 Billion!

The US Government is an UNFUNDED mandate!  It can only provide 75% of the money it has PROMISED in spending to the military, health care, etc!  With tax receipts of around $1.8 Trillion last year, the US Government is spending $2.3 Trillion!  Oh god, what are we to do?!?!

Not only that, the US Government currently has an $8 Trillion short fall created by Republican administrations.  That's over 4 times the amount of money the government takes in in one year alone!

That's right, the US Government is BROKEN!  Not in 2041, not in 2052, but RIGHT NOW!

Compare the US Government as a whole to Social Security, which is currently running a SURPLUS!  How is a program that is running a surplus RIGHT NOW bankrupt and broken, while the government is running a debt even larger than Social Security's projected deficit in 2041 is perfectly fine with borrow-and-spend Bush economics?

Drafting GOP Kids For Iraq War

We all know that poor kids are disproportionately fighting and dying in Iraq.  F9/11 made this painfully true.  We also know that these poor people, by in large, voted for John Kerry.  I think the exit pols put lower-income support for Kerry around 55-60%.

There are tons of canvassers and volunteers still angry from Nov. 2, with not much to do.  Well, do I have an idea, and it works in every single state--swing or no swing--in the US of A.

Go door-to-door in rich, exurbs and suburbs, trying to find families with draft age kids or younger, to sign up for the military!

Real FOX Values = Trading Spouses

How do all these evangelicals watch Fox News like it's there god-given duty to watch Brit Hume spew his spewing?

Fox broadcasts the worst smut on TV than anyone.  Trading Spouses?  So much for the sanctity of marriage!

How about sex, drugs, and violence to our kids?  Ever seen the OC?  Or North Shore?

It's glamourizes sex, drugs, violence, and all with the FOX name.

I wrote on my blog about how we as Dems need our inner-Tipper Gore back, and it's true.  All these media companies are own by right-wing corporatists, and yet somehow the left gets blamed for the smut, drugs, and sex on TV.

It's FOX that is doing it.

Hitting Repubs With Intelligent Design

I'm beginning to enjoy the extreme right-wing elements of the Bush regime, and how--since we have painted the CW as the holy-rollers won the election for Bush--they are owed A LOT of stuff.

They think they have a voice, they think they are a majority.  Let them.  Let them continue to build a bridge to the 19th Century with stories like these:

ATLANTA - First, Georgia's education chief tried to take the word "evolution" out of the state's science curriculum. Now a suburban Atlanta county is in federal court over textbook stickers that call evolution "a theory, not a fact." Some here worry that Georgia is making itself look like a bunch of rubes or, worse, discrediting its own students.

We Dems are looking for themes to run nationally, and I think this is one of them.  This is the 21st Century.  We need kids who are educated and prepared for the 21st Century, and REPUBLICANS are trying to roll-back education saying the world is flat.

Sinners in The Hands of An Angry God

Everyone remember "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" from high school?  It's by Jonathan Edwards, and was written in 1741.  It is the start of the evangelical, God is gonna send you to hell, bull crap that has been plaguing the American electorate since the no-fun puritans first step foot on Plymouth Rock.

Here is a choice line:

"There is nothing that keeps wicked men at any one moment out of hell, but the mere pleasure of God." By the mere pleasure of God, I mean his sovereign pleasure, his arbitrary will, restrained by no obligation, hindered by no manner of difficulty, any more than if nothing else but God's mere will had in the least degree, or in any respect whatsoever, any hand in the preservation of wicked men one moment.

More on flip....
